Why are my lips so dry?

The lips are one of the most precious parts of the human body; they play a crucial role in communication and are essential to beautiful smiles. But, another reason lips deserve our attention; they are one of the most sensitive parts of the human body.

Here are some of the many different circumstances and environments which may be causing your dry pout:

  • On flights: The air inside an aeroplane is very dry because of low humidity, which can make your body susceptible to dehydration. Because of the low humidity, our bodies will try to preserve water in our skin, which will dry our lips.

How to prevent this: Drink plenty of water on the flight, use lip care that locks in moisture, and apply a generous amount before your flight. Ingredients such as coconut or jojoba oil are brilliant for locking in moisture.

Our Moisturising Balm contains a blend of natural botanical and fruit oils, butters, and extracts, harnessing nature's power to nourish your lips.

  • During cold or dry winters: The air is also very dry in winter. The combination of cold wind and dry artificial heating inside can strip the moisture from your lips.

How to prevent this: While we can’t control the weather, we can help how hydrated we are. Aim for 2.7 litres of water per day, consider using an air humidifier indoors to keep the air around you moist and use a hydrating lip mask to give your lips a dose of TLC.

Our Hydrating Mask has a water-light concoction of ingredients to deeply hydrate and plump the lips all season round.

Other causes of dry lips:

  • Licking your lips: Licking your lips can worsen dryness, as it coats them in saliva, which contains digestive enzymes. Reach for a lip balm instead; our Moisturising Balm is a buttery treatment for lips and contains nourishing ingredients.

  • Eating too much spicy food: Spicy foods can compromise the skin barrier and cause discomfort to chapped lips.

  • An underlying medical condition: Chapped lips may also be associated with various underlying medical conditions. If you think this may apply, contact your GP or medical practitioner.

How to prevent dry lips:

  • Eat foods with essential fatty acids, such as nuts, seeds, fish and olive oil.

  • Drink plenty of water. This will keep your skin and lips hydrated.
  • Use your lip balm before applying lipstick.

  • Avoid matte lipstick in winter.

  • Apply lip balm every time you feel dryness.

  • Eat foods with vitamin E, such as fruits, dairy and wheat germ.

  • Eat foods such as tomatoes and watermelon. These foods help moisturise your lips.

  • Drink tea. Tea has skin-protecting compounds.

  • Do not drink soda and coffee. These beverages dry out your lips.

  • Avoid ingredients with alcohol.

  • Avoid licking your lips.

  • Applying lip balm over your lipstick can also be a good idea to treat and prevent dry lips all season round.

To sum it up, there are many reasons why your lips become chapped. The best place to start? Take care of your lips!

Our Lip Care Tool Kit is the ultimate regime for the lips; each product and tool has been formulated and designed to complement each other, working hand in hand to provide complete care for your lips.
