The Benefits of Gua Sha for the Lips
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese technique that involves scraping the skin with a massage tool to improve circulation and boost collagen production to leave a brighter and more youthful complexion.
While you may be aware of the benefits Gua sha has on the rest of your face, are you aware of the impact Gua sha can have on your lips? Lip fillers seem more prolific than ever; however, if you are looking for a natural alternative to fillers, Gua sha may be an excellent route to take.
Read on to discover the wonders of Gua sha and whether it’s right for you!
Does Gua sha work?
The leading cause of ageing is the loss of collagen, and the lips are no exception, resulting in loss of plumpness in our pout. As we get older, our lip volume decreases, our upper lip thins and flattens, and can appear to fold over the teeth, leading to a smaller and thinner appearance.
Gua sha can help with volume loss by stimulating the skin and reducing smokers lines. While they are not as long-lasting as fillers, they are a natural alternative to help rejuvenate the lips.
How do I use Gua sha on the lips?
Choose the right tool: We created our Rose Quartz Spatula and Sculpting Tool with this in mind; it is a multi-purpose hygienic tool to dip into your Apoth products and a lip massage tool - the ultimate add on to your beauty/lip care regime.
Prepare your skin: Apply a facial oil, toner to the face, so the tool has a smooth surface to glide over.
Massage in gentle circular motions across the outer perimeter of your lips: Our lips are a sensitive part of our face, be sure to massage them gently to increase blood flow and induce a plumping effect.
Extra tips: Finish your routine with your Lip Mask to add a dose of hydration, following up with your Lip Balm to lock in moisture.
When should you not use Gua sha?
If you have new or active fillers, botox surrounding your lips or mouth, it is best to wait. If you’re prone to cold sores, it’s recommended to avoid Gua sha altogether.
